I have been actively involved in photography for 50 years. Its been a rollercoaster ride. Changes in technology, changes in the creative aspect and most important changes in society and how society interacts and reacts to images. With today’s ease of creating decent images by anyone with a cellphone its getting increasingly harder to be known as a true photographer. I, in the past, have expressed dismay in the fact that technology has made more picture takers assume they can become Photographers just by making a Facebook page, zipping off some business cards at home and going for it. Well, I can honestly say that I have seen LOTS of “photographers” fall by the wayside when they fail to understand that being an accomplished shooter it takes far more than pressing the shutter button to be successful. It takes commitment to the craft, insight into the needs of clients and a creative eye that, trust me, not all have. Am I an accomplished photographer..no. Am I a photographer that is committed to the craft..you bet your ass I am. My advice to anyone wanting to become a pro shooter…take lots of photos and trash about 99% of them if you are shooting digi. Better yet, pick up a film camera, by a roll of 24 exposure film, be conservative in your shooting…remember its only 24 shots you have and you have to pay to get the film souped and printed! Learn to use the greatest computer on earth, your brain. Learn the basics…learn to walk before you learn to run!
